Students Share Concerns That Artificial Intelligence Is Eroding Their Academic Abilities, Study Reveals
Based on new research, pupils are expressing fears that employing artificial intelligence is weakening their capacity to study. Many state it renders schoolwork “effortless”, while others claim it restricts their innovative capacity and stops them from acquiring additional competencies.
Broad Use of AI By Students
A study examining the usage of AI in United Kingdom learning centers discovered that merely 2% of pupils between the ages of 13 and 18 stated they did not use artificial intelligence for their schoolwork, while four-fifths said they consistently used it.
Unfavorable Effect on Skills
In spite of artificial intelligence's widespread use, 62% of the students stated it has had a unfavorable influence on their skills and development at school. 25% of the students affirmed that artificial intelligence “facilitates accessing solutions without independent work”.
An additional 12% reported AI “restricts my imaginative processes”, while similar numbers reported they were less prone to tackle challenges or compose originally.
Nuanced Understanding By Students
An expert in generative AI noted that the investigation was one of the initial to examine how students in the UK were integrating artificial intelligence into their education.

The expert added: “Youth utilizing AI demonstrate a highly refined and adult-like awareness of its educational implications, underscoring how their independent technological adoption in schooling contexts is frequently underestimated.”
Scientific Investigations and Broader Issues
The discoveries are consistent with scientific studies on the utilization of artificial intelligence in learning. A particular analysis measured neural responses while composition tasks among students using advanced AI systems and determined: “These findings provoke anxiety about the future scholastic effects of AI dependence and stress the importance of more extensive investigation into its learning functions.”
Roughly half of the 2,000 pupils questioned expressed they were concerned their classmates were “surreptitiously utilizing AI” for studies without their teachers being able to detect it.
Call for Instruction and Positive Aspects
Numerous students indicated that they sought more assistance from educators for the appropriate use of artificial intelligence and in judging whether its output was accurate. An initiative designed to supporting instructors with AI guidance is being introduced.
“Educators will find certain results particularly noteworthy, especially the extent to which learners anticipate direction from them. Although a technological gap between generations is often assumed, students continue to seek productive AI usage advice from their teachers, which is an encouraging sign.” the specialist said.
An educator observed: “The findings closely reflect what I see in school. Many pupils recognise AI’s value for creativity, revision, and problem-solving but often use it as a shortcut rather than a learning tool.”
Just 31% said they didn’t think AI use had a unfavorable influence on any of their competencies. However, the bulk of pupils said using artificial intelligence helped them develop additional competencies, such as 18% who indicated it helped them comprehend problems, and 15% who reported it aided them generate “original and superior” ideas.
Learner Perspectives
When requested to expand, a 15-year-old female pupil commented: “My comprehension of mathematics has improved, and AI assists me in tackling complex problems.”
At the same time, a boy aged 14 said: “My cognitive speed has increased compared to before.”
