The Monarch Formally Removes Prince Andrew of HRH Style and Princely Dignity

Through a decisive action, King Charles has officially stripped the former Duke of York of his HRH style and his princely title.

These alterations were made official by issuing letters patent under the official state seal, which were recorded in the Gazette.

The official notice declared: “The king has been graciously inclined by royal instruments under the Great Seal dated 3 November 2025 to declare that the individual in question shall no longer be entitled to hold and enjoy the designation of ‘Royal Highness’ and the honorific status of ‘Prince’.”

Another entry confirmed the removal of the dukedom from the peerage list, effective immediately.

It read: “His Majesty has been pleased to direct by warrant under his royal sign manual dated 30 October 2025 to direct his government minister to ensure the Duke of York to be struck from the peerage roll.”

Background of the Royal Action

The move follows mounting scrutiny over Andrew's links to the late financier Jeffrey Epstein, including the release of a memoir by Virginia Giuffre.

Giuffre claimed that she was sexually abused by the former prince after being trafficked by Epstein, allegations that Andrew has consistently strenuously denied.

Mechanism of Title Removal

The king employed his royal prerogative—accepted authorities held by the monarch—after discussions with Cabinet Office officials, instead of through legislative action.

Royal instruments and royal warrants are tools of this prerogative, used to grant or revoke honors and styles.

Since the Royal Highness designation is granted by letters patent, it can be revoked through the same instrument.

Further Actions and Backing

Following the palace statement, the senior legal official was directed to prepare the necessary documents for the title removals.

The decision also involves Mountbatten Windsor relinquishing his tenancy on his Windsor residence, a thirty-room Crown Estate property where he has resided for twenty years.

The government fully supported the king's decision.

Retained Honor

Despite the stripping of honors, it was announced that Andrew will retain his Falklands service medal, awarded for his service as a helicopter co-pilot during the Falklands conflict.
