United Kingdom Extends Toxic Alcohol Toxicity Warning List with An additional 11 Countries

Methanol caution sign

British government has placed eleven further nations to its official warning register regarding the threats of toxic alcohol toxicity from tainted spirits.

This expanded warning covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following reports of "a global increase in the number of reported cases" of toxic alcohol contamination.

Only a few weeks ago, officials had earlier added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current list, after multiple notable cases such as the tragic death of half a dozen visitors in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being warned that as little as small amounts of toxic alcohol can lead to permanent eye damage or fatality within 12–48 hours.

What is Industrial Alcohol and How is it Employed?

Industrial alcohol is a poisonous chemical commonly utilized in coolant, windshield wiper fluid, and paint thinner. This substance is not meant for ingestion.

Although it is generated during the manufacture of alcoholic drinks, reputable manufacturers bring it down to low, safe levels for human consumption through the purification method.

But in various destinations, it is clandestinely blended into spirits to cut costs, and as it is tasteless and scentless, it is impossible to identify.

Government Guidance for Travellers

Authorities representative the minister emphasized that every traveler should recognize the indicators of methanol contamination.

"If you're drinking spirits in foreign countries, stick to trusted places and steer clear of homemade alcohol or unspecified beverages," the official warned.

"In case something seems unusual, such as a fatigue that's way worse than usual or sight issues – get medical help right away."

The entire roster of countries listed as carrying a threat of industrial alcohol poisoning now includes: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
