Unusual Red Electrical Discharge Captured in Skies
Three image specialists in New Zealand have successfully captured photographs of crimson flashes, among the least common light phenomena on Earth, in which luminous crimson flashes manifest in the heavens.
A Remarkable Night of Discovery
This group of artists began their evening to photograph the Milky Way over the distinctive clay formations in the southern region of the country on a night in October, and unexpectedly witnessed the unusual spectacle.
Assuming they would be lucky to get clear skies that night, but their night transformed into “an unforgettable one,” an individual involved commented.
Upon examining his files for a Milky Way panorama and found he had recorded crimson electrical bursts,” he noted. “The discovery was astounding – there was a whole bunch of excited exclamations and various reactions in the darkness.”
Explaining Red Sprites
The scarlet phenomena are atmospheric energy releases in the mesosphere, caused by electrical storms. Differing from lightning that shoots towards the earth, red sprites shoot upwards towards the upper atmosphere, creating shapes that resemble pillars, root vegetables or even jellyfish. The earliest recorded picture of a red sprite was taken – by chance – in the late eighties, by a group at the an educational institution.
Fleeting and Otherworldly Sightings
These events are extremely short-lived – enduring only a thousandth of a second – that they are infrequently observed to the naked eye, but a team member had a lucky break. “By chance, I was gazing straight toward an occurrence when it took place – just a perfect coincidence looking at the appropriate section of the heavens and I observed a short crimson illumination,” he said.
Observing the phenomena was a goal for this individual, an award-winning nocturnal imaging specialist. “It looks like you’re seeing something that is not real, it feels otherworldly … it’s this very deep red colour that is visible for an instant, so it is fascinating to observe.”
Technical and Artistic Mastery
Capturing a this phenomenon demands a expertise in specialized camera skills, as well as an knowledge about scientific principles and artistic vision, the individual stated. “This is a highly complex form of imaging that’s highly fulfilling as well.”
A different team member remarked it was one of the “most amazing after-dark experiences” of his career. “I could see the galactic band glowing above the distant edge while these giant scarlet filaments of light danced above a electrical event hundreds of kilometres away,” he explained.
An Exceptional Photographic Achievement
As far as he knows, there are no other images capturing red sprites and the night sky of the south in the same photograph.
“It represented a unique instance when you know you are seeing something you’ll probably never see again.”
